TO VISIT - Yarrangobilly
Caves |
Located within Kosciuszko National Park on the
Snowy Mountains Highway is the Yarrangobilly
Caves. Access is 77 km south of Tumut, 102 km north of Cooma and
105 km north-east of Khancoban via the Cabramurra Road.
The caves are in a limestone
belt, approximately 1.5 kilometres wide and 14 kilometres long
that was formed about 440 million years ago from the shells and
skeletons of sea animals. About 40 million years ago, the whole
area was pushed 1,200 metres above sea level. There are a number of short walks located within
the Yarrangobilly area. Guided and self guided tours of the Yarrangobilly
Caves are
available. Tickets
are purchased at the Information Centre, including maps and information
of the Kosciuszko National Park. Take your pick from the self -guided
cave which is open from 9.30am to 4.30pm every day or one of the
guided cave inspections such as the beautiful Jersey Cave, the
wheelchair accessible Jillabenan Cave, (one of the most highly
decorated caves in eastern Australia) or the immense North Glory
Cave. Family and multi-tour tickets are available. The Castle and
Harrie Wood Caves are torchlight adventure tours held during school
holidays or by special appointment - ring for further details.
Picnic facilities at Yarrangobilly
Caves include gas and wood fired
BBQ.
There is also a thermal pool with a constant
27 degrees Celsius temperature, all year round. It has been estimated
that the water in the pool rises from a depth of 762 metres and
bubbles out at the rate of 91 000 litres per hour. It is possible
to swim in the thermal pool in the middle of winter when there
is snow on the ground.
